Today, Rep. Mike Bost (R-Ill.), the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Tex.), the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance & Memorial Affairs, and Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.), the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Technology Modernization, released the following statements after introducing legislation to make it easier and faster for veterans to file for disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA):
“I know firsthand how frustrating VA’s disability claims system is. It was outdated when I left the Marines and filed for disability compensation in the 1980s and has, sadly, not improved much since then,” said Ranking Member Bost. “That’s why I am joining Rep. Nehls and Rep. Rosendale, the Republican leaders on the Disability Assistance & Memorial Affairs and Technology Modernization Subcommittees, in introducing bills to cut through the red tape and modernize this critical system for veterans and VA staff. These improvements are long-overdue. I hope to see them considered in Committee soon.” “Our current disability claims system is outdated, and it prevents our Nation’s finest from receiving the benefits they rightfully deserve in a timely manner,” said DAMA Ranking Member Nehls. “I am proud to join Ranking Member Bost in introducing the Modernizing VA Disability Benefit Questionnaires Act, which will simplify the disability exam process for our veterans and the VA.” “Veterans who are hospitalized and suffering from severe illnesses and disabilities are not reliably receiving the benefits they deserve on time. Veterans should not have to worry about how they are going to pay for essential goods because the VA bureaucracy is slow or inconsistent in processing their claims,” said TM Ranking Member Rosendale. “My bill will help streamline temporary rating claims, allowing timelier claim processes, avoiding human error when it comes to much needed compensation. America’s veterans have willingly sacrificed so much for our great nation, and it is far past time that they are ensured the benefits they deserve in a timely manner.” To learn more about the VA Principles of Benefits Automation Act, click here.
