Today, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mike Bost (R-Ill.), and Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.), released the following joint statement after Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Doug Collins announced that the agency will offer $112 million dollars in grants for organizations through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program in 2026 – this lifesaving VA program provides grant funding for mental health organizations across the country.
In 2020, General Bergman and House Republicans championed the creation of the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program as part of the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act. Since the launch of the Fox Grants in 2022, VA has awarded $210 million dollars in funding to over 100 community-based organizations across the United States and its territories – expanding the reach of VA’s mental health and suicide prevention support services to thousands of veterans, servicemembers, and their families in the process.
“We must do more to get more veterans out of the rut and onto a path of purpose – since 2022, the Fox Grants have provided that lifesaving bridge for thousands of veterans and servicemembers who may be dealing with mental health issues,” said Chairman Bost and General Bergman. “In rural districts like ours, a veteran driving just up the road for therapy or treatment can make or break their situation. That’s why we are so proud of the Trump administration’s multimillion dollar investment in this VA program that works. The Fox Grants cast a wider net for VA’s suicide prevention efforts and allow mental health organizations in communities where veterans live to have the backing of the federal government to reach even more veterans, servicemembers, and their families who may be struggling. We will continue to work in lockstep with the Trump administration to combat veteran suicide and think outside the box to get veterans the support they need.”
