Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.), the Ranking Member of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, released the following statement after the Committee marked up six bills to support student veterans, assist homeless veterans facing legal challenges, and increase quality and transparency across the Department of Veterans Affairs: “This morning, our Committee continued to deliver on our promises to America’s veterans by voting unanimously in support of legislation to help them overcome legal trouble, to pursue their educational goals, and to make VA more accountable. While I believe these bills could have benefitted from regular order, I think that they will improve benefits and services to our veterans and I look forward to considering them on the House Floor as soon as possible. I am also grateful to Chairman Takano for committing to consider a bill that I have strongly advocated for to prevent veteran suicide - H.R. 3495, the IMPROVE Act - during our next markup on October 29th. This decision reflects the bipartisan spirit that our Committee is known for and that veterans deserve. I hope it will continue going forward on other important issues.” The IMPROVE Well-being for Veterans Act would expand the reach of services aimed at preventing suicide among veterans by providing grants to community entities that provide and coordinate suicide prevention services for them and their families.
