Today, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mike Bost (R-Ill.), and Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.), released the following statements after the House passed H.R. 1663, The Veteran Scam and Fraud Evasion (VSAFE) Act, crucial legislation led by Rep. Calvert to establish an office within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that would be responsible for providing consistent scam prevention guidance, up-to-date information to veterans and their families, and monitor fraud and scams to ensure that veterans’ and their VA benefits are safeguarded.
“At a time when scammers are using every savvy trick at their disposal to take advantage of veterans and seniors, we must ensure that VA is ahead of the curve to protect veterans’ benefits,” said Chairman Bost. “Today, the House passed my good friend and colleague, Rep. Ken Calvert’s bill to do exactly that. No veteran should have to worry about their benefits being stolen and VA must have the right tools in place to safeguard veterans and their families from fraud. I look forward to getting this good bill to President Trump’s desk soon as House Republicans work to modernize VA for today and tomorrow’s veteran community.”
“We owe it to our veterans to protect them from scams and fraud that could cause serious financial and personal hardship,” said Rep. Calvert. “The VSAFE Act will make sure the VA has and the tools it needs to prioritize the coordination of its scam and fraud prevention activities. I thank my House colleagues for standing with me to have the backs of our veterans.”
