Yesterday and today, the House of Representatives passed new legislation to support veterans. Legislation included a bill to help cut down on the bureaucracy experienced by veterans with pending claims by eliminating unwanted duplication of review of claims (H.R. 1484—as amended, 418-1), as well as the implementation of a recognition program in the Department of Veterans Affairs to highlight businesses that hire veterans, the “VetStar Award Program” (H.R. 802—as amended, 408-11). The legislation now heads to the Senate for consideration.

“These two bills mark the first steps in two of the Committee’s highest priorities—decreasing the shameful backlog of claims and high veteran unemployment,” stated Rep. Jeff Miller (FL-01), Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. “This Committee is dedicated to working in a bipartisan manner to find solutions to the problems facing America’s veterans.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the Full Committee met to discuss the private and public efforts to curb veteran unemployment. The Committee expects to consider legislation in the coming months that specifically addresses job training and meaningful employment for veterans.
