Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.), the Ranking Member of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, released the following statement following today’s Full Committee markup of H.R. 3495, as amended, the IMPROVE Act, and H.R. 4920, the Department of Veterans Affairs Contracting Preference Consistency Act: "Caring for those who are at-risk of taking their own lives is fundamentally the right thing to do. Yet, today, Chairman Takano advanced a partisan bill that would prohibit suicidal veterans from getting life-saving care in their local communities funded by VA. In doing so, he has let down the 20 servicemembers and veterans who die by suicide every day. Despite this setback, I remain hopeful that we will have an opportunity to continue working together and with our colleagues in the Senate to right this wrong for our nation’s veterans before this bill reaches the President’s desk." |
