Roe Statement on VA's Announcement on Electronic Health Record Transition

Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.), chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, released the following statement after Acting VA Secretary Robert Wilkie approved the award of the previously announced contract with Cerner to transition the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to a new electronic health record system:

“This transition should be done right, not fast, and I’m pleased the department took extra time to review the contract before moving forward. Oversight of implementation and spending will be critical as this process continues. I spoke to Acting Secretary Wilkie today, and I’m encouraged by our conversation.

“Both my staff and I have taken oversight trips to the MHS GENESIS initial implementation sites in Washington state to check in on DoD’s progress and to ensure VA will learn from the problems that have arisen during DoD’s transition. We will continue this rigorous oversight as site assessments and in-depth planning begin.”
