On Thursday, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.), Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, led his CODEL in a visit to Normandy American Cemetery, where the members participated in a wreath-laying ceremony ahead of the upcoming 74th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2018.
The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Scott Desjardins, superintendent of the cemetery. Normandy American Cemetery is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), which falls under the jurisdiction of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. ABMC is in the planning stages of a $21 million renovation at Normandy American Cemetery and surrounding sites. In addition to visiting the American Cemetery at Normandy, the delegation paid their respects at Point du Hoc Ranger Monument, a site erected by the French to honor the American Second Ranger Battalion led by Lt. Col. James E. Rudder for their heroism during World War II. Chairman Roe is joined by Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Subcommittee Chairman Mike Bost (R-Illi.) and Reps. Neal Dunn, M.D. (R-Fla.), Lou Correa (D-Calif.) and Andy Harris, M.D. (R-Md.). Photos of the delegation at Normandy American Cemetery and Point du Hoc are below. Additional stops will be announced in the coming days.
