Roe Statement on Government Shutdown
Today, Chairman Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after Democrats in Congress shut down the federal government:
“While roughly 95 percent of VA operations, including medical care, will continue, it’s absolutely shameful that Democrats in the House and Senate would hold funding for our troops hostage over immigration policy, despite the fact bipartisan negotiations are ongoing and President Trump has expressed his commitment to acting on DACA. Nancy Pelosi is being disingenuous when she says there’s a funding shortfall at VA and using that as an excuse not to support a continuing resolution. The department is being funded at its highest level in history. It’s time she stop using the men and women who serve this nation as pawns.
“On the other hand, the effects of the Schumer shutdown are very real and will be felt by veterans around the country. Disability appeals reviews will drastically slow and roughly 15,000 - 20,000 veterans waiting to close on homes from now through the end of the month could lose their loans.
“This is absolutely ridiculous, and I urge Democrats in Congress to stop their reckless posturing that is putting American servicemembers and veterans’ benefits at risk.”
Note: Over 471,000 appeals claims are currently awaiting review.
