Today, Reps. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) and Tim Walz (D-Minn.), Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, respectively, released the following statements after the House passed Roe and Walz’s resolution to authorize the creation of a commemorative coin in honor of The American Legion’s 100 years of service to America’s veterans.

"Since 1919, The American Legion has dedicated itself to serving our nation's veterans,” said Roe. “I’m proud to stand with Ranking Member Walz and my colleagues in the House today to honor the Legion’s century of service by authorizing the creation of this commemorative coin. I look forward to continuing to work alongside the American Legion in our shared goal of improving the lives of America’s heroes."  

“For nearly a century, the American Legion has worked tirelessly day and night to improve the lives of our veterans and their families, and for that reason, words cannot express the gratitude I have for the men and women of the American Legion,” said Walz. “As both a veteran and a legislator, I see firsthand the results they achieve for veterans on a daily basis. That is why I am honored to stand alongside my dear friend, colleague, and fellow veteran, Chairman Phil Roe, as the House passes the American Legion 100^th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act.”

The American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act would authorize the U.S. mint to produce a commemorative coin for The American Legion's 100th anniversary of its founding in 1919. The mint would issue the coins for a one-year period beginning January 1, 2019, and proceeds from the sale of the coins would support The American Legion’s program and services, which fall under four categories: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Children and Youth and Americanism.
