Representatives Jeff Miller of Florida and Bob Filner of California hosted a Veterans Employment Summit in Washington on Sept. 13 to discuss best practices for hiring veterans in the private sector.

Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis celebrated two victories this week as the House Veterans Affairs Committee, for which the Sunshine State congressman serves as vice chairman, passed two bills he introduced.

WASHINGTON — The ambitious jobs plan outlined by the president Thursday night may be a tough sell in Congress, but lawmakers appear on the verge of advancing at least one piece of unemployment legislation in the near future: A new veterans jobs bill.

Yesterday, the VFW was on hand at the Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill, where the House Committee on Veterans Affairs moved forward with seven pieces of critical veterans' legislation -- many of which the VFW has supported in testimony before the committee this year.

A key House committee approved a $1.5 billion veterans’ employment bill Thursday that promises a new job retraining program for veterans aged 35 and older who have been out of work for at least 26 weeks as well as improvements in transition assistance, job placement and professional licensing initiatives for all veterans.
