Chairman Roe: We’ve spent all this money and time and we can’t get a paycheck out

Washington, D.C.
-Today, the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity chaired by Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) held a hearing on VA's GI Bill payment delays.

Below are Chairman Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.)’s remarks:

Below is a copy of the Chairman’s remarks:

One of the things that the VA has gotten right is they named this long-term solution right, and that’s appropriate. It’s going to take a long time to get the solution it looks like.

Let me put this in real terms.

Young soldier, with a two year old, probably not three figures in a bank account. Probably not three figures, not four, but probably not three. With a 1974 used Dodge Colt with a straight stick shift looking for the GI Bill to help him when he went back to school. That was me.

And I got the money on time, without all the computers, all the nonsense, I got a check every month from the VA – not a single hiccup. 1975.

And today, with all this technology and millions, and millions, and millions of dollars spent – Amazon has by August of this year – I know because a company in my district makes them – sent out a billion articles to people and got I think most it exactly right. And that is a frustration I have, that we’ve spent all this money and time and we can’t get a paycheck out to somebody.
