Chairman Roe Commends President Trump for Establishing VA Accountability Office

Today, Chairman Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s executive order creating the Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Office at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA):

“From day one, President Trump has pledged to bring accountability to the Department of Veterans Affairs. His actions today to create a new office at VA focused on accountability and whistleblower protection demonstrate that he is doing just that. President Trump knows that holding VA employees to a higher standard and protecting the men and women who blow the whistle on injustices are essential to building a better VA, and I thank the president and Secretary Shulkin for supporting legislative reforms that will make it easier to fire or discipline employees that fail in their duty to serve our nation’s heroes.”

Background:

Chairman Roe was present for the signing of the executive order at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Trump administration issued this Statement of Administration Policy on the VA Accountability First Act of 2017, Chairman Roe’s legislation that would give the VA Secretary increased flexibility to remove, demote, or suspend any VA employee.

H.R. 1259 passed the House of Representatives on March 16, 2017. For more information, visit republicans-veterans.house.gov/accountability.
